Log

These long crossings on the road are killers. Why didn’t I bring my knitting? The Black Hills are only 3 hours behind us and I’m already thinking we should have stayed in Keystone for the Biker Bikini Wash. The high light so far has been reading the ever-increasing Wall Drug signs. We saw our first one in Montana and Jon jumped for joy … nothing an Oregonian would understand. I insisted that Jon take the Wall exit so I could see the store that has billboards up in 3 states (probably more) and advertises ice cream, 5 cent coffee, free ice water, Western art, homemade pie, fast food, dinosaurs, gold, leather wear, sporting goods, a casino, saloon, costume shop, and shooting gallery. It sounded like a whole town under one roof and I just couldn’t imagine what it would look like. I was envisioning a Wal-Mart Superstore x 10. Was I ever disappointed when it turned out to be another tourist-trap strip mall.

Our progress east was interrupted by a stop at a rest area in the middle of 8,000,000 acres of grassland. Six video surveillance cameras were working hard to ensure our safety. I, myself, was relieved.

The radio is blasting out: “It’s hard to kiss the lips at night that chew your ass out all day long.” That’ll be hard to top.

If you think this is boring to read, you ought to be here.

Finally we crossed from South Dakota to North Dakota to Minnesota. Jon showed me how to have a little mid-western fun. (Try all three!) Thank goodness I get to ride tomorrow!
